The artwork
The Assumption of the Virgin by Correggio, frescoed in the dome of Parma Cathedral between 1526 and 1530, is one of the most revolutionary masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. The Virgin is depicted ascending to heaven, surrounded by a swirling multitude of apostles, angels and clouds that completely dissolve the architectural structure of the dome. Correggio creates an astonishing illusion of infinite space, turning painting into a dynamic, immersive vision.
The bodies are foreshortened, in continuous movement, wrapped in a vibrant light that accentuates the sense of ascent and spiritual triumph. Below, the apostles express amazement and wonder, while the viewer's gaze is naturally led upwards to the luminous centre of the composition. The work unites faith, theatricality and perspectival invention, anticipating Baroque sensibilities and offering a visual and emotional experience of extraordinary intensity.
