The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century depiction of an ambassador's reception in Venice, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The small square in front of the Doge's Palace dominates the scene, with anchored ships and a crowd of nobles gathered to greet the new ambassador taking office in the city of Venice. Further in the background there are the columns of San Marco and San Todaro and the dome of the church of San Maria della Salute. The sky is cloudy, with threatening rain clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740. Another version of this painting by Canaletto exists.
