“The Arrest” of 1890 is a painting by Giovanni Fattori in which a scene of military life becomes a social and psychological account of power and discipline in post-Risorgimento Italy.
The horse, imposing and firmly controlled, underlines the balance of power between authority and the arrested man, who appears smaller and almost compressed in the space at the animal's feet. In the background a huddled group of figures can be glimpsed, almost a blurred crowd watching from afar, creating the sense of an everyday, repeated and almost anonymous episode.
