This reproduction of the Arch of Septimius Severus, made by the master engraver Giovanni Battista Piranesi in 1756, portrays with extraordinary precision one of the most emblematic monuments of ancient Rome.

The Arch of Septimius Severus is an imposing triumphal arch in the Roman Forum, erected in AD 203 to commemorate the victories of the Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons Caracalla and Geta over the Parthians. Built of travertine and faced with marble, the arch is famous for its rich reliefs recounting the emperor's military campaigns.
In the 18th century, when Piranesi was working, the Roman Forum was far from the state of preservation and excavation we know today. It was often called "Campo Vaccino" (the Cow Field) because of its use as pasture and its semi-abandoned state. The Arch of Septimius Severus, though one of the most imposing and recognisable structures, was partly buried and surrounded by debris and wild vegetation. Its sculptures, though partly visible, were blackened by time and exposure to the elements.
The work is an important historical and artistic document that combines archaeological rigour with Piranesi's typical aesthetic sensibility, offering lovers of Roman art and history a piece of great documentary and decorative value.
