The artwork
A unique and unusual view of an architectural capriccio featuring a self-portrait by Bernardo Bellotto as a Venetian nobleman. Bellotto is prominently depicted in a burgundy cloak, standing in front of the entrance to St. Mark's Square, accompanied by other nobles. The shadows cast on the arches leading to the square are to be noted. The sky is clear; the painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1765.
