The image depicts the moment in which Cleopatra dips a pearl earring into the cup and Mark Antony freezes in silent surprise, experiencing a mixed feeling of bewilderment and admiration.
The painting is by Antonio Gionima, son of the painter Simone and Francesca Maria Bandiera, born in Venice on 4 March 1697. The canvases, known in part thanks to some photographs, immediately reveal, in the light and lively pictorial drafting, the original and innovative temperament of the painter.
