The artwork

The Annunciation, part of the Polyptych of Saint Anthony by Piero della Francesca, is one of the masterpieces of 15th-century Italian Renaissance painting. Made between 1454 and 1466, the polyptych shows the artist's skill in combining rigorous perspective, compositional balance and luminous colour. The Annunciation, placed centrally, depicts the Archangel Gabriel announcing to Mary the birth of Christ, with attention to architectural detail and spatial depth.

The pale background and even light enhance the serenity and solemnity of the sacred scene. Piero della Francesca uses refined symbols, such as the lily of purity, and the elegant gestures of the figures to communicate complex theological meanings. The polyptych, originally intended for the church of Sant'Antonio in Arezzo, testifies to the fusion of faith, geometry and harmony typical of the Renaissance. Each panel of the polyptych offers a careful study of the human form and of perspective, making the work an extraordinary example of Italian Renaissance art.
