The artwork
This angel, Vasari writes, was painted in great secrecy, with Pontormo shut away behind a wooden screen, and the chapel was then unveiled “to the wonder of all Florence”. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- The angel floating in mid-air, in a shimmering pink robe and an orange cloak.
- A tall, light figure, suited to a narrow wall between two windows.
- A gift for a Gabriel or a Gabriella, for a name day.
The angel is part of the Annunciation that Pontormo frescoed in the Capponi Chapel, in the church of Santa Felicita in Florence. The decoration of the chapel was commissioned from him by Ludovico Capponi, and it was finished in 1528.
On the other side of the window is the Virgin Annunciate, which you will find as a twin print. The shop also has the squared drawing Pontormo prepared for this figure, now in the Uffizi.
The fresco is still in Santa Felicita, a few steps from the Ponte Vecchio, on the entrance wall of the chapel.
On its own it looks good in a hallway or along a staircase; next to the Virgin, on either side of a door, it recreates the Annunciation of Santa Felicita. It is a thoughtful gift for someone waiting for good news.
