Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical studies mark a fundamental turning point in the history of art and science. From 1489, Leonardo undertook a systematic analysis of the human body, carrying out more than 30 dissections of men, women and children in order to observe organs, muscles, nerves and blood vessels at first hand. His drawings, of extraordinary precision and beauty, are not limited to visual representation but explore the physiological workings of the body, anticipating later discoveries such as the muscular nature of the heart and the circulation of the blood.
Although his observations were centuries ahead of the medical science of his day, the manuscripts remained unpublished until the 19th century, limiting their immediate impact. Leonardo's anatomical drawings, the fruit of an exceptional synthesis of art and scientific enquiry, demonstrate his pioneering vision and his desire to understand the complexity of the human body in all its natural perfection.
