The artwork
Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical studies marked a fundamental turning point in the history of art and science. Beginning in 1489, Leonardo undertook a systematic analysis of the human body, performing over 30 dissections of men, women, and children to directly observe organs, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. His drawings, of extraordinary precision and beauty, are not limited to visual representation but explore the physiological functioning of the body, anticipating future discoveries such as the muscular nature of the heart and blood circulation.
Although his observations were centuries ahead of medical science of the time, the manuscripts remained unpublished until the 19th century, limiting their immediate impact. Leonardo's anatomical plates, the result of an exceptional synthesis of art and scientific inquiry, demonstrate his pioneering vision and desire to understand the complexity of the human body in all its natural perfection.
