Beginning in 1489, Leonardo undertook a systematic analysis of the human body, performing over 30 dissections of men, women, and children to directly observe organs, muscles, nerves, and blood vessels. Although his observations were centuries ahead of medical science of the time, the manuscripts remained unpublished until the 19th century, limiting their immediate impact.
