The artwork

A Florentine merchant wanted paintings by the city's finest artists in his antechamber, and Pontormo painted him an entire procession on its way to Bethlehem. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

  • Kings, horsemen and servants in procession, with a wide landscape behind them.
  • The landscape format fills the wall above a sofa or a sideboard.
  • A gift for Christmas, for Epiphany, for anyone who loves Florence.

Around 1523 Giovan Maria Benintendi had the antechamber of his house decorated, the room where guests were made to wait. He called on four painters, Franciabigio, Bacchiacca, Andrea del Sarto and Pontormo, who had been Andrea's pupil. Their paintings hung in the same room, like a small private gallery.

Pontormo chose the Magi and crowded the panel with figures. Behind the Madonna he also placed Saint Anne, her mother, who does not usually appear in this scene. Today the panel belongs to the Palatine Gallery in Palazzo Pitti, Florence, and is among the works in the major exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome.

Hung in a living room or dining room, it accompanies the December festivities and stays beautiful all year round. It is a gift for anyone who loves Florence and the Renaissance.
