The artwork
TheAdoration of the Magi by Andrea Mantegna is a work full of symbols referring to the Passion of Christ and the theme of sacrifice. Painted by the Venetian artist at the start of his stay in Mantua at the Gonzaga court, it is rich in religious and political references.
The famous sacred scene depicts the three Magi as they approach the Infant Jesus to offer him their gifts with deep reverence. The composition shows the figures compressed into a close-up space, with sober colours and expressive details that accentuate the realism and religious devotion typical of the Italian Renaissance.
