The artwork
Painted between 1303 and 1305 by Giotto di Bondone in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, the fresco depicts the scene of the Adoration of the Magi before the Virgin and Child. The eldest Magi has already knelt and placed his crown on the ground, while the other two offer gifts: incense and myrrh, symbols of sanctity and future death. In the background, a rocky landscape opens up, with a hut and two camels, elements that introduce a touch of exoticism.
The balanced and intense composition reveals Giotto's mastery in rendering human gestures and expressions with naturalness and emotional depth. The comet, with its curved tail, illuminates the scene and is believed to be inspired by the passage of Halley's Comet in 1301. With this work, Giotto renews the medieval pictorial language, anticipating the sensibility of the Renaissance.
