The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the town of Dolo, with a detail of the landing stage on the Brenta, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the little harbour where the boats plying the Brenta put in, with scenes of everyday life. The Brenta is busy with small boats. The day is clear and fine, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The town extends on the left, and in the distance one can make out the bell tower of Dolo. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1725. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, UK.
