In “A Lock, a Column and a Church” Canaletto builds a capriccio, that is, an imaginary view mixing real and invented elements in an ideal landscape.
In the foreground the lock, with its stone and timber structures, introduces the theme of controlled water and technical labour, while the isolated column recalls the world of ancient glories, like a fragment of Rome transplanted to the lagoon.
On the right-hand side the round church, compact and luminous, dominates the scene and guides the eye towards the low horizon, where small buildings and distant outlines suggest a rare city, suspended between reality and pictorial invention.
