The Legio X Equestris was Julius Caesar's favourite legion and one of the most celebrated units of the Roman army.
Founded by Caesar in 61 BC, while he was governor of Hispania Ulterior, it was the first legion the general raised personally, and he immediately appreciated its discipline and valour. The name Equestris arose in 58 BC, when Caesar had the legionaries of the Tenth mounted on horseback to attend the parley with the Germanic king Ariovistus, as he did not trust his own auxiliary Gallic cavalry. From then on the legion became his trusted guard, deployed at the decisive points of every campaign.
The Tenth fought in all the main battles of the Gallic Wars, from the clashes with the Helvetii to its central role at Alesia, contributing decisively to the final subjugation of the peoples of Gaul. It also followed Caesar in the civil war against Pompey, distinguishing itself but also experiencing difficult moments, such as the retreat at Dyrrhachium. After its veterans were discharged in 45 BC, the legion was reconstituted following Caesar's assassination, fought for the triumvirs up to Philippi and, after various reorganisations, was finally merged into the Legio X Gemina, losing the title Equestris.
