The artwork
The consul Cicero denounces before the entire Senate Catiline, who had hatched a conspiracy against Cicero himself and the whole Res Publica, delivering the Oratio in Catilinam Prima in Senatu Habita, that is, the First Catilinarian Oration.
Catiline is in the foreground, like an outcast and at a safe distance from Cicero, listening disdainfully to his adversary and brooding on his misdeeds. Catiline's hands seem almost to sink like claws into the folds of his toga. As Cicero attacks Catiline, the other senators, who listen dumbfounded to Cicero's accusation against Catiline (namely of conspiring against the Roman Republic and of hiring assassins to kill him), have already moved away from the seat of the rebel, who is left completely apart from the rest of the assembly, sitting hunched in on himself.
Most of the senators listen to and watch Cicero closely, while a few others (those higher up, near Catiline's seat) gaze at the accused in astonishment and talk among themselves. Moreover, the light that illuminates Cicero is warm and dazzling, while Catiline appears rather in shadow by comparison.
