Made for the County Atlas, it shows Northamptonshire along with Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, and Rutland, delineating borders, rivers, towns, and parks using conventional symbols but still lacking a road network. The work responded to the administrative and military needs of the Crown, but also reflected the cultural prestige of English Renaissance geography. Saxton combined survey data with a decorative rendering typical of the 16th century, transforming the map into a tool of government and, at the same time, an object of noble
