The Tōkaidō was the great road that linked Edo, today's Tokyo, with Kyoto, the city where the emperor lived: almost five hundred kilometres, with fifty-three post stations.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSanjō Bridge, over the Kamo River, was the final goal of the road, and the series closes here, at the entrance to the city. After such a long journey Hiroshige does not show a palace or a grand gate, but ordinary people crossing the bridge, just as at the start, on Nihonbashi Bridge in Edo.
