Edo was the name of Tokyo until 1868. The plum garden at Kameido, on the eastern edge of the city, was where people went on outings at the end of winter, when the plum trees blossom, before the cherries. Hiroshige puts the trunk in the foreground, cut off by the edges of the sheet, and leaves the visitors far away behind the fence: this way he brings us into the garden as if we were there.

In 1887 the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who collected Japanese prints, copied this one in oils; his picture is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
