The artwork

The Battle of Cannae, fought on 2 August 216 BC, is one of the most famous and decisive battles of the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage. Led by Hannibal, the Carthaginian army managed to inflict one of the worst defeats in Roman history. The importance of this battle lies in various factors.

Strategically, Hannibal demonstrated tactical brilliance by using a double pincer to encircle and destroy Roman legions, an innovation that influenced military tactics for centuries. Psychologically, the devastating defeat dealt a severe blow to Roman morale and cast doubt on their invincibility.

Politically, Hannibal's victory encouraged many of Rome's city-states and allies to change sides or declare neutrality, further destabilizing Roman power. The Battle of Cannae also marked a turning point for Rome, which, learning from its mistakes, reformed its military tactics and ultimately prevailed in the war.
